Furisode era una forma di Kimono tradizionalmente indossata da donne non sposate, indicata dalle maniche allungate (Sode).
In tempi precedenti, le donne agitavano le maniche alla persona da cui erano attratte portando all'uso moderno della parola ondeggiare (Furu) in un contesto romantico. (Furu/Futta) Rifiuta / Rifiutata.
Una volta che le donne si sposavano, avrebbero accorciato le maniche del loro Kimono per significare che avrebbero amato solo il loro marito.
